I think one of the biggest downfalls of the solopreneur/freelancer is the DIY mentality that drives us to think we HAVE to do it all, learn in all, be it all and know it all. It’s this kind of mentality that drives us – away from our goals and overall success.
Case in point: I was working on a project for a client, and part of that project involved a ton of web research on a project. now, I’m a pretty savvy web-researcher, but for this particular project I would have found myself spending far too many hours online doing research when I have plenty of other tasks and projects to keep me busy.Now I’d normally just suck it up, stay awake for a few days straight and get the web research done thanks in part to about 1,000 cups of black coffee, but that strategy just wasn’t feasible in this case since it wasn’t my only project at the time.
Enter Brett Brosseau of Vermont and his ability to outsource tasks that a king. 
Brett took ten minutes to hear me go on about:
- The topics that needed to be researched
- How the data needed to be compiled
- Deadlines and milestones
- Who would own the research data at the end of the project
- Payment
From those ten minutes, Brett was able to suggest someone he trusted to perform the web research duties for the project correctly – and within my budget. The following day, this person called me, got some more details from me, and was able to start the project that same day. So, yes, I’ve let go (a little) of the notion that I HAVE to do it all. You have to be able to trust the people to whom you outsource your project work. And, it’s always easier having someone in your back pocket like Brett Brosseau. Vermont is a long way away, too but it’s the Internet – you’ll never notice. I had no idea where the outsourced service provider was until after we spoke on the phone and exchanged a few email.
Think about outsourcing when your time can be better spent doing core work for your business.
