The name of this blog post has basically, well, it’s basically made me a lot of money, that’s what it’s done.
I’m paraphrasing the great Cat Stevens, but seriously, the title of this blog post drives me insane – especially when it’s used as the title of a web page. And it’s the first thing I notice when a new client comes to me and says “I need your help.”
Let’s do a little test, shall we?
Google something. Google anything. Or, better yet, Google your keywords. If you don’t know what your keywords are, contact me. Google anything except the word ‘home.’ Now, look at the results. Do you see the word home in the titles of any of those pages?
Go look, I’ll wait.
The word ‘home’ wasn’t in any of the titles was it? So why is the word in the title of your web pages? It’s 2009, yet for some websites, it might as well be 1999 the way they have their titles and descriptions written.
Titles aren’t easy to write, but something more than ‘home’ will at least give searchers and visitors an idea of what your site is about.
Compare these two:
“Home” vs. “Hire Freelance Copywriter | SEO Content Copywriter Jason Pedley”
If you were searching for an SEO content copywriter, which one do you think Google would place closer to page one?
Exactly.
Use this in your business. If your site pages are named things like…
- home
- about
- contact
- page1
- index
…then you need to have someone change this. Sooner rather than later. 2009 is your year. Don’t let the little things hold your website, and you, from success.
