You want me to do what with your title?

by writingforweb on July 22, 2008

It’s 2008, and I thought that people were pretty well school in some of the more obvious aspects of SEO. But I still get people coming to me who want titles stuffed with keywords. Even after I explain that a title for a web page should only be about 70 characters including spaces, they want me to make some crazy title like this:

Web Design in Clayton, NC. Clayton, NC Web Designer has the best Web Designs for your Web Site

Do you see where I’m going with this?

Life is about balance. SEO is about balance. The title above is NOT about balance. But people think a title like that will contribute to their online marketing goals. So now my job isn’t just to write SEO copy for websites, press releases and articles – I now have to educate potential clients on how to find balance.

And it’s not just titles that I find potential clients what me to stuff with keywords. I get crazy requests for ‘keyword paragraphs’ that serve no purpose other than making people think they’re competing better in organic search.

So, potential client, bring me your copy assignments and bring your open mind, because not only will I write your optimized copy, I’ll educate you in why I do what I do.
